Who Is Speaking?

Interest in the spiritual world is everywhere.

People seek guidance through dreams, horoscopes, tarot cards, mediums, spirit guides, energy practices, supernatural signs, and messages they believe came from someone who died.

Some experiences feel peaceful. Others create fear.

A spiritual experience can feel real and still be misunderstood. It can come from the Creator, from the human mind, or from a deceptive spiritual power.

How can you know the difference?

The Bible does not tell us to fear the spirit world or accept every supernatural claim. It teaches us to test spiritual messages and seek guidance from the Creator alone.

Is the Spiritual World Real?

Read Colossians 1:15–17 ↗.

The Creator made both the visible and invisible parts of creation.

The physical world is real, but it is not all that exists. The Bible describes angels, spiritual conflict, and powers that human eyes ordinarily cannot see.

Read Ephesians 6:12 ↗.

Paul said our deepest struggle is not against flesh and blood. A spiritual conflict is taking place between the Creator’s kingdom and the forces of evil.

This does not make people our enemies. Human beings may choose harmful actions and must sometimes be held accountable, but the greater enemy works through deception, pride, hatred, temptation, and fear.

Who Are the Loyal Angels?

Angels are created spiritual beings who serve the Creator.

Read Psalm 103:20–21 ↗.

Loyal angels listen to God and carry out His commands.

Read Hebrews 1:13–14 ↗.

The Creator sends angels to help those who are receiving salvation.

Throughout the Bible, angels:

• Protected people
• Delivered messages from God
• Strengthened people in crisis
• Guided followers of Jesus
• Helped people escape danger
• Fought against evil powers
• Accompanied Jesus
• Pointed people toward the Creator

Read Psalm 34:7 ↗ and Psalm 91:11 ↗.

The Creator can send angels to protect His people even when they do not see what is happening.

Should We Pray to Angels?

No.

Read Revelation 22:8–9 ↗.

When John fell before an angel, the angel immediately told him to stop and worship God.

Loyal angels never try to replace the Creator. They do not ask people to pray to them, build devotion around them, or seek secret messages from them.

The Bible never tells us to discover the name of a personal angel or contact one.

We pray to the Creator through Jesus. God decides when and how angels serve.

If a spiritual being seeks worship, special loyalty, or attention that belongs to God, it is not a loyal angel.

Where Did Evil Spirits Come From?

Read Revelation 12:7–9 ↗.

Satan began as a perfect angel but chose pride and rebellion. Other angels joined him and were expelled from heaven.

These fallen angels are called demons, evil spirits, or unclean spirits.

God did not create them evil. They used their freedom to reject Him.

They now work with Satan to deceive humanity and oppose the Creator’s plan.

A final judgment has already been prepared for Satan and his angels. Their power is temporary, and their destruction is certain.

Is Satan Equal to the Creator?

No.

The Creator has always existed. Satan is a created being.

God is everywhere. Satan can be in only one place at a time.

God knows everything. Satan does not.

God can create life. Satan cannot.

God’s power has no limit. Satan’s power is restricted.

Read Job 1:6–12 ↗ and Job 2:1–6 ↗.

Satan could not go beyond the limits God placed upon him.

Satan wants people to fear him as if he were equal to the Creator. He is not.

Jesus has already defeated him through His death and resurrection.

Read Colossians 2:14–15 ↗ and Hebrews 2:14 ↗.

Those who belong to Jesus do not have to live in terror of evil spirits.

What Do Evil Spirits Want?

Jesus described Satan as a liar, murderer, and thief.

Read John 8:44 ↗ and John 10:10 ↗.

Evil spirits work to:

• Distort the Creator’s character
• Lead people away from Jesus
• Contradict Scripture
• Encourage sin
• Create false worship
• Imitate people who have died
• Produce fear and confusion
• Offer power without obedience to God
• Make bondage feel like freedom
• Divide people and relationships
• Convince people that evil is harmless
• Keep people from trusting the Creator

They may appear frightening, but they can also appear kind, wise, beautiful, or helpful.

Deception succeeds when it does not look dangerous.

Can Evil Spirits Appear Good?

Read 2 Corinthians 11:13–15 ↗.

Satan can appear as an angel of light. His servants can present themselves as if they are working for good.

A message may sound loving while quietly leading someone away from Scripture.

A spiritual experience may feel peaceful while encouraging dependence on a power other than the Creator.

An apparent miracle may impress people while teaching something false.

The feeling created by an experience does not prove its source.

Truth must be tested.

Can the Dead Communicate With Us?

Lesson 16 showed that the dead are unconscious until the resurrection.

Read Ecclesiastes 9:5–6 ↗ and Psalm 146:4 ↗.

The dead do not think, speak, watch the living, or send messages.

If a spirit appears with the face, voice, memories, or mannerisms of someone who died, it cannot be that person.

Evil spirits have observed human beings for generations. They may know family details, habits, voices, and private history. They can use familiar information to create a convincing imitation.

The Creator gives us the truth about death partly to protect us from this deception.

What Is a Familiar Spirit?

The Bible uses the expression “familiar spirit” for a spiritual power connected with mediums and attempts to contact the dead.

The word “familiar” suggests something that appears known or recognizable.

A spirit may claim:

“I am your relative.”

“I have watched over your family.”

“I came to protect you.”

“I carry a message from someone you lost.”

The spirit’s familiarity is part of the deception.

The Creator warns His people not to seek mediums or familiar spirits.

He does not give this warning because He wants to keep comforting knowledge from us. He gives it because the dead cannot speak and the beings answering are dangerous.

What Happened When Saul Visited a Medium?

Read 1 Samuel 28:3–20 ↗.

King Saul had repeatedly rejected the Creator’s guidance. When God did not give him the answer he wanted, Saul secretly visited a medium.

A being appeared and claimed to be the dead prophet Samuel.

Was it really Samuel?

The rest of Scripture says the dead are unconscious. God had also forbidden attempts to contact them.

Read 1 Chronicles 10:13–14 ↗.

This passage says Saul died partly because he consulted a medium and did not seek guidance from the Creator.

God did not send Samuel through a practice He had forbidden. The appearance was a deceptive spirit impersonating the prophet.

The experience seemed real, but its supernatural nature did not make it trustworthy.

Why Does the Creator Forbid Divination?

Read Deuteronomy 18:9–14 ↗.

The Bible warns against:

• Divination
• Sorcery
• Witchcraft
• Casting spells
• Consulting mediums
• Seeking spirit guides
• Attempting to contact the dead
• Looking for hidden knowledge through spiritual powers

These practices seek information, protection, power, or control from a source other than the Creator.

They may begin with curiosity. Someone may think:

“I am only experimenting.”

“This is entertainment.”

“I am trying to understand myself.”

“I only want one answer.”

But opening the mind to deceptive powers can create fear, confusion, dependence, and spiritual bondage.

The Creator does not forbid these things to take freedom away. He wants to protect our freedom.

What About Astrology and Horoscopes?

Astrology claims that the position of stars and planets can reveal personality, relationships, choices, or the future.

The Creator made the stars, but He did not give them authority over your identity or decisions.

Read Isaiah 47:12–15 ↗.

God warned against looking to astrologers for guidance and security.

Your birth date does not determine your character or future.

You are responsible for your choices, and your deepest identity comes from the Creator.

Read Psalm 147:4–5 ↗.

God knows the stars by name. The stars do not control Him, and they do not control you.

You can study and enjoy the sky without seeking spiritual direction from it.

What About Tarot Cards and Fortune-Telling?

Tarot cards and fortune-telling claim to reveal hidden truth or future events through spiritual signs and symbolic interpretation.

The Bible tells us to seek wisdom from the Creator.

Read James 1:5 ↗.

God does not ask you to manipulate spiritual symbols to discover His will.

Read Isaiah 46:9–10 ↗.

The Creator alone knows the future completely.

A fortune-teller may make broad statements that seem personal. A prediction may influence someone to make choices that help the prediction appear true. In other cases, deceptive spirits may provide information.

Neither possibility makes the practice safe.

Bring your questions directly to the Creator through prayer and Scripture.

Can the Creator Use Dreams?

Yes. The Bible records times when God used dreams.

Joseph, Daniel, and others received messages through dreams. The Creator also promised that the Holy Spirit could work through dreams and visions.

Read Joel 2:28 ↗ and Acts 10:9–16 ↗.

But not every dream comes from God.

Read Ecclesiastes 5:3 ↗ and Ecclesiastes 5:7 ↗.

Dreams can grow from daily concerns, stress, grief, memories, and imagination.

A dream from the Creator will:

• Agree with Scripture
• Honor Jesus
• Lead toward truth and obedience
• Produce humility
• Never direct someone toward forbidden spiritual practices
• Never replace the Bible’s authority

Do not make a major spiritual decision based only on a dream.

Pray, study Scripture, wait for clarity, and seek wise guidance from people who respect God’s Word.

What About Signs and Coincidences?

People often look for signs when they feel uncertain.

They may ask the Creator to make a certain number appear, send a specific animal, arrange a song, or produce an unusual event.

The Creator can guide circumstances, but trying to force every coincidence into a spiritual message can create confusion.

Jesus warned against constantly demanding signs.

Read Proverbs 3:5–6 ↗.

God normally guides us through Scripture, prayer, the Holy Spirit, wise counsel, and circumstances that agree with His Word.

A coincidence may be meaningful, or it may simply be a coincidence. Do not build truth on it.

The Creator has already given clear principles for most decisions.

Can Supernatural Miracles Come From Evil?

Yes.

Read Matthew 24:24 ↗.

Jesus said false messiahs and prophets would perform great signs capable of deceiving many people.

Read Revelation 13:13–14 ↗.

End-time deception will include supernatural signs.

This means a healing, vision, prediction, or extraordinary event cannot prove that a teacher comes from God.

Ask:

• Does the message agree with the whole Bible?
• Does it lead toward Jesus?
• Does it uphold the Creator’s commandments?
• Does it produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit?
• Does it encourage humility or build one person’s power?
• Does it invite careful examination or punish questions?
• Does it direct worship to the Creator alone?

Scripture is a safer guide than spectacle.

How Should Cultural Practices Be Evaluated?

Native nations and families have different teachings, ceremonies, and customs. No one should assume that one practice represents every Native person.

A cultural practice may involve family, memory, language, art, gratitude, community, or respect. Those meanings should be understood before anyone makes a judgment.

Respecting creation is not the same as worshiping creation.

Remembering a relative is not the same as praying to the dead.

Participating in a community gathering is not automatically an act of worship.

At the same time, a practice should be examined if it asks someone to:

• Pray to a being other than the Creator
• Invite or channel a spirit
• Seek guidance from the dead
• Use an object as a source of spiritual power
• Enter an altered state to contact spirits
• Receive protection from another spiritual being
• Learn hidden knowledge through divination
• Make an offering to gain favor from a spirit

Do not call a practice evil simply because it is unfamiliar.

Do not call a practice safe simply because it is old or meaningful.

Learn what it actually means, compare it with Scripture, and decide where it directs spiritual loyalty.

The same test applies to practices from churches, popular culture, and every other spiritual tradition.

Does Following Jesus Require Cultural Erasure?

The Creator is not asking you to surrender your Native identity. He asks every person to give Him their highest spiritual loyalty.

He alone deserves worship.

Following Jesus may lead anyone from any culture to leave beliefs or practices that conflict with Scripture. That is spiritual transformation, not racial transformation.

The Creator does not ask you to become white, adopt another group’s personality, or feel ashamed of your ancestry.

He asks you to let His Word decide what is spiritually true.

You can preserve language, family relationships, art, music, food, community responsibilities, and every cultural expression that can be practiced with full loyalty to Him.

How Can You Test a Spirit?

Read 1 John 4:1–3 ↗.

The Bible says not to believe every spirit. We must test spiritual claims.

Test the message by Scripture

Read Isaiah 8:20 ↗.

The Holy Spirit will never contradict the Word He inspired.

Test what it says about Jesus

Read John 16:13–14 ↗.

The Holy Spirit honors Jesus. Deceptive spirits may reduce Him to one teacher among many, deny His authority, or direct attention elsewhere.

Test where it directs worship

Read Revelation 19:10 ↗.

Loyal angels direct worship to God. Evil spirits seek attention, loyalty, dependence, or worship for themselves.

Test the fruit

Read Galatians 5:22–23 ↗.

The Holy Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Deceptive spirits may produce obsession, arrogance, confusion, isolation, fear, hatred, dishonesty, or loss of self-control.

Test its relationship with God’s law

Read Romans 8:5–7 ↗.

The Holy Spirit leads people toward obedience. A spirit that encourages rebellion against the Creator’s clear commands is not from Him.

How Does the Holy Spirit Differ From a Spirit Guide?

The Holy Spirit is God. He is not one spirit among many.

He does not compete with other spirits for your attention. He carries the full authority of the Creator.

The Holy Spirit:

• Inspired Scripture
• Reveals Jesus
• Convicts us of sin
• Guides us into truth
• Changes the heart
• Gives spiritual gifts
• Produces holy character
• Leads us toward obedience
• Never deceives
• Never seeks to be controlled

A spirit guide claims to provide personal knowledge, protection, or power outside the Creator’s revealed way.

You do not need a spirit guide.

You need the Holy Spirit.

Can Every Problem Be Blamed on a Demon?

No.

The Bible recognizes spiritual attacks, but not every problem is directly caused by an evil spirit.

Human beings experience:

• Physical illness
• Mental and emotional illness
• Trauma
• Grief
• Stress
• Lack of sleep
• Effects of substances
• Relationship conflict
• Consequences of personal choices
• Conditions caused by living in a broken world

Seeking medical treatment, counseling, recovery support, or practical help does not show weak faith.

The Creator can work through trained and caring people.

We should neither ignore spiritual conflict nor blame every struggle on a demon.

Ask for wisdom and respond to the whole situation.

What Does Spiritual Harassment Look Like?

Evil spirits may seek influence through temptation, deception, fear, accusation, or practices that invite their involvement.

Someone may experience:

• Intense fear connected with spiritual activity
• Pressure to return to a forbidden practice
• Repeated lies about the Creator
• Obsession with supernatural signs
• A sense of dependence on an object or ritual
• Voices or appearances claiming to be the dead
• Strong resistance when turning toward Jesus
• Nightmares connected with occult involvement
• Compulsion to seek more secret knowledge

Some of these experiences can also have physical or psychological causes. Do not make a quick diagnosis.

Bring the experience into the light. Pray, examine any spiritual involvement, seek support from trustworthy followers of Jesus, and obtain professional care when appropriate.

You do not need to face fear alone.

How Does Jesus Protect Us?

Read Luke 10:17–20 ↗.

Evil spirits submitted to the authority of Jesus. He is greater than every power of darkness.

Read Colossians 1:13–14 ↗.

Jesus rescues people from the power of darkness and brings them into His kingdom.

Protection comes through relationship with Him rather than through charms, special objects, secret words, or human power.

You can ask Jesus for protection directly.

Put On the Creator’s Armor

Read Ephesians 6:10–18 ↗.

The Bible describes spiritual protection as armor.

The belt of truth

Know what Scripture teaches so that lies cannot easily control you.

The protection of righteousness

Receive the righteousness of Jesus and choose what is right.

The good news of peace

Stand in the peace Jesus gives and carry that peace into your relationships.

The shield of faith

Trust the Creator’s character when fear and accusation attack your mind.

The helmet of salvation

Protect your thoughts with the assurance that your life belongs to Jesus.

The sword of the Spirit

Use the Word of God to answer deception.

Prayer

Stay connected to the Creator throughout the conflict.

This armor is not a physical object or ritual. It describes a daily life of truth, faith, obedience, Scripture, and prayer.

What If You Have Been Involved With Forbidden Practices?

The Creator’s mercy is greater than your past.

Read Acts 19:18–20 ↗.

People who had practiced magic confessed what they had done and removed the materials connected with it.

If you have been involved with spiritual practices that conflict with Scripture:

1. Tell the Creator honestly what you did.
2. Ask for forgiveness through Jesus.
3. Renounce every spiritual connection outside God.
4. Stop participating in the practice.
5. Remove objects used specifically to seek spiritual power.
6. Do not give those objects to someone else.
7. Ask the Creator to fill you with the Holy Spirit.
8. Seek prayer and support from trustworthy people.
9. Continue filling your mind with Scripture.
10. Refuse to return when curiosity or fear pulls you back.

Freedom begins with bringing the truth into the light.

Should You Speak Directly to Evil Spirits?

Do not seek conversations with spirits or ask them for information.

Your focus belongs on Jesus.

If you experience spiritual oppression, pray to the Creator and claim the authority of Jesus. Ask trusted, mature followers of Jesus to pray with you.

Avoid dramatic curiosity about the names, ranks, or stories of evil spirits. Such attention can become another form of fascination.

Read Philippians 4:8 ↗.

Fill your mind with what is true, honorable, pure, loving, and worthy of praise.

The purpose of learning about evil is to recognize deception and remain close to the Creator.

You Do Not Have to Live in Fear

Read 1 John 4:4 ↗.

The One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

Read Psalm 27:1 ↗.

The Creator is your light and salvation. You do not have to be controlled by fear.

Read James 4:7–8 ↗.

Submit yourself to God, resist the devil, and move closer to the Creator.

Satan wants either fascination or terror. Jesus offers truth, freedom, and peace.

Your safety does not depend on knowing everything about darkness. It depends on knowing the One who defeated it.

Try This During the Coming Week

Set aside fifteen quiet minutes each day.

Read one passage:

• Day 1: Psalm 91 ↗

• Day 3: Deuteronomy 18:9–14 ↗
• Day 4: 1 Samuel 28:3–20 ↗ and 1 Chronicles 10:13–14 ↗
• Day 5: 1 John 4:1–6 ↗

After each reading, write down:

• What does this passage reveal about the spiritual world?
• What warning should I remember?
• What protection does the Creator offer?
• Is there a choice I need to make?
• What truth gives me peace?

Begin and end each day with a simple prayer asking the Creator to fill you with the Holy Spirit, guard your mind, and protect you from deception.

A Prayer You Can Pray

Creator God, You alone deserve my worship and highest loyalty. Thank You for revealing the truth about the spirit world. Protect me from deception, fear, and every power that leads away from You. I reject guidance from the dead, divination, spirit guides, and every spiritual practice that conflicts with Your Word. Please forgive any involvement I have had with these things. Place my life under the authority of Jesus and fill me with the Holy Spirit. Help me test every message by Scripture. Surround me with Your protection and give me courage, wisdom, truth, and peace. Amen.

Remember This

The invisible spiritual world is real.

Loyal angels serve the Creator and never seek worship.

Evil spirits are fallen angels who joined Satan’s rebellion.

Satan is a created and limited being. He is not equal to God.

Evil spirits can appear kind, familiar, or spiritually impressive.

The dead are unconscious and cannot communicate with the living.

A spirit claiming to be someone who died is a deceiver.

Divination, mediums, astrology, and spirit guidance lead people away from reliance on the Creator.

Not every dream, coincidence, miracle, or peaceful feeling comes from God.

Every spiritual message must be tested by Scripture and the character of Jesus.

Following Jesus requires spiritual loyalty, not cultural erasure.

Jesus is stronger than every power of darkness.
